Healing

Curry! Every morning there are wonderful, mildly spiced Indian dishes. They are light and complex; there seem to be 1,001 spices in them. At midday, Solarkitchen, the community canteen: simple, vegetarian, good. The principle is healthy food for everyone; everyone can afford it. In the evening, these wonderful dishes again. What there is not: alcohol, meat or fish, sugar. Eggs are a luxury. In Germany I ate a lot of chocolate; now it is much too sweet for me. I treat myself to a vitamin B complex supplement.

The exciting thing is that it is changing my whole body. In Ayurvedic medicine, nutrition is regarded as a central aspect. I understand that now. This healing process is not healing from some illness; actually, I am quite healthy. But much comes to light. Old wounds, for example. My hands have many small scars from cuts with kitchen knives. I am not particularly careful; I live dangerously in the kitchen. These small scars are all coming to light, more every week. My metabolism is changing. It feels excellent.

Media

Alongside this change (I do not want to call it a diet at all, for the range of vegetables, spices, proteins and carbohydrates, fruit and quark is so much more varied and nourishing that it is really more of a feast, an intoxication, a banquet), there is a real reduction: of media. I hardly watch films or videos at all; there is no television and no internet connection in the room. The Dining Hall is not suitable for it either. I still follow the news, but no longer as frantically as in Europe. I sleep well.

In the evenings after dinner I talk with many unfamiliar people about all kinds of things; over the past few days we have played cards. For at eight in the evening everything in Auroville is closed, unless there is a concert, a performance, a film. Which is not uncommon.

Alongside my small scars, a sadness is also rising, but it feels right. This hectic pace and the superfluous consumption of the past decades in Germany, France or the United States were fun, but they not only harmed the planet; they did not do me good either. Life in luxury is actually sad. I feel that now, and that is good. And here is the healing process. I think this is what we mean by diseases of civilization.

P.S.: The Auroville Bakery is the place of my sin; unfortunately it is irresistible 🙂
