Music – Nāda-Brahman

First Encounters with Ragas As a teenager, I listened to ragas for hours. I knew nothing about them. I looked up a little: microtonality, meditation, sequence of tones. I understood no more than that. But they were the deepest musical experiences — a meditation to music. To this day, ragas lead me inward or into deep states of insight that are not rational. Rather, they are a way of being in the world. Music as Shared Space and Pure Energy…

Structure and Process

The traditional music of India, the raga, is melodic in relation to a fundamental tone. Western music is harmonic, that is, simultaneous and complex. In the West, much thinking takes place in terms of structures; for a time, there was much talk of structuralist and poststructuralist thought. Complex systems are found everywhere: in philosophy, in canonical texts and systems of images, in technology and models that explain the world. One essential underlying idea is atomistic thinking. Connection

Connection Over the past two years I have immersed myself quite deeply in the Upanishads, practiced some yoga, and engaged a little with the system of yoga. The West as a Stranger

It is so beautiful and also so sad to live in a world that sees the West as foreign. I take this perspective more and more and don’t understand much anymore. I was sick for a few days, and as many people do, I watched movies, nothing inspiring. Series garbage. I haven’t done that for a…

Memory

In India, the books of the Vedas have been held in memory for 3000 years. The Rigveda (10,552 verses), Samaveda (1549 verses), Yajurveda (4001 verses) and Atharvaveda (5977 verses), as well as the Upanishads (about 1800 verses), are passed down from generation to generation. Sanskrit grammar has not changed substantially, and its pronunciation has been handed down with the greatest precision through exact phonetic description. So these texts sound the same today as they did 3000 years ago. They are…

Dhrupad

They were four magical days. The Auroville Film Institute organized a residency with Ustad Bahauddin Dagar from November 7 to 10, 2022. It took place in Bhumika Hall, Bharat Nivas Auroville. Dhrupad – the film (1983) Ustad Bahauddin Dagar is a Rudraveena player. His family has played the instrument for 20 generations! His father and uncle (Zia Mohiyuddin Dagar and Fariduddin Dagar) were true masters. There is a wonderful film about this, Dhrupad, by the Indian director Mani Kaul. Among…
