Retinal Art and the Ruins of Representation

Retinal Art and the Ruins of Representation: Revisiting Plato’s Cave and the Notion of Rasa in the Natyashastra Christoph Kluetsch “Something in the world forces us to think. This something is not an object of recognition, but a fundamental encounter.” Gilles Deleuze – Difference and repetition p. 139 “Minds exist only in relation to other minds.” (Mihai Nadin) “even those elements designated as “basic” or “proto-elements” are not primitive but are, on the contrary, of a complex nature.” (Kandinsky, point……

1st lecture: Apples and Mangoes

The snake in paradise seduced Eve to eat a fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge that holds the distinction between good and evil. Why was the tree of knowledge a forbidden tree? Why did the snake seduce Eve? What did the fruit taste like? When I asked myself why I want to talk about this, I felt like Eve standing in front of the tree, talking to a snake who attempts to seduce me to eat the fruit. Do…

Focal Point

What would a world look like without the focal point of a lens? Our eyes have a lens that gathers the light, focuses it on a plane, so that the retina can receive this focused image—as an image on a plane. The rays of light are captured by receptors and passed on to the brain. This vibration of the nerve cells is transcribed into another vibration, that of consciousness. This principle was copied in the camera obscura and the cinematograph…

Art beyond darkness – Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2022/23

Warum brauchen wir eine Biennale? Diese Frage habe ich mich oft gestellt. Vor COVID-19 habe ich viele Orte mit internationalen Kulturveranstaltungen besucht. I picked out a few things and went on Saturday to the “Adivasi Round Table discussion with Vandna Tete, Ganga Sahay Meena, Seral Murmu & Ashwini Kumar Pankaj, moderated by Gopika Jadeja”…

Healing

Curry! Every morning there are wonderful, mildly spiced Indian dishes. They are light and complex; there seem to be 1,001 spices in them. At midday, Solarkitchen, the community canteen: simple, vegetarian, good. The principle is healthy food for everyone; everyone can afford it. In the evening, these wonderful dishes again. What there is not: alcohol, meat or fish, sugar. Eggs are a luxury. In Germany I ate a lot of chocolate; now it is much too sweet for me. I…
