In Europe, we have an idea of enlightenment as something where an individual recognizes that he or she lives under externally imposed constraints. It is then a matter of overcoming these constraints and placing oneself under a greater law. A light comes on and shines into all the dark corners in order to question what has not yet been reflected and scrutinized. This movement of thought is described with the metaphor of light as a torch. The light of enlightenment shines centrally into all corners.
Bewusstsein ist jedoch interaktiv. Es besteht nur im Zusammenspiel mit anderem Bewusstsein. Ein Neugeborenes benötigt die Fürsorge der Mutter oder einer Ersatzgemeinschaft. Sprache wird nur durch Kommunikation gelernt. Empathie ist nur in der Gemeinschaft möglich. Manchmal wird Namaste übersetzt mit „Das Licht in mir grüßt das Licht in dir“. Diese Grußformel erinnert uns jeden Tag daran, dass wir nur in Gemeinschaft existieren. Die Metapher der Fackel hat hier nun eine ganz andere Bedeutung. Das Licht ist in uns, nicht ein externes Werkzeug. Das Licht ist überall und nicht eine Zentralperspektive. Licht ist eine Energie, die in jedem/r strahlt. Dieses innere Licht, das überall existiert, ist Bewusstsein.
